A person who provides proper direction, instruction, mentoring and training to an individual or a sports team can be considered as a coach. Anyone can become a skilled player if they practice well. But to be a complete player requires a guide who can train you, guide you in a proper direction, praise your skills, overcome your weaknesses and many more.

This guidance is provided by a coach. These are 10 of the main characteristics of an effective Soccer Coach:

  1. BECOME A GOOD ROLE MODEL

To be a coach the most important point is to be a good player by thyself. A chess or a cricket player cannot assist a team to play soccer. When a coach is a role model itself, it automatically can create desire and enthusiasm in learning by a role model. Players feel worth of imitating the coach.

  1. BE PUNCTUAL

Punctuality is something which is praised by all. Only if a coach is punctual, he can expect the players for the same. They can plan the session beforehand and no time is wasted and all the objectives of the training sessions can be achieved within the time.

  1. BE A GOOD TEACHER

A teacher is someone who teaches. An effective coach is a good teacher as well. A coach’s duty is to teach passing, dribbling, tackling, shooting, developing skills. During training giving a correct and proper instruction is as important as playing a game. Better your training sessions are, better will be the results.

  1. FRIENDLY

Player-coach relationship is something which cannot be just a formal interaction type. A coach has to be a good friend of his team. Being a friend helps a coach to get to know the players more than just a player. It can help the coach to know the personalities of the players and hence can understand and handle the emotional, mental and stressful situation and can motivate the players accordingly.

A coach should know how important communication is. Recognition and acknowledgment of the players for their performance are as important as their training. Encouragement and praise can lift them up and have a big impact on the team. Even body language is as important as the verbal communication.

A coach should listen to the players. They can only know them better if they listen to them. We all know ‘a good listener is always a good speaker‘, to train them a coach should listen carefully and take feedback too for even better coaching.

In every aspect of life there comes a situation when people may fail, may feel unmotivated, in Soccer there may be a bad day. There may be a situation when the players become emotionally unstable and may feel demotivated. At these situations, a coach’s role comes to the rescue if acted wisely as a motivator.

  1. PATIENCE

Every field of life there comes a situation when people get panic and may take decisions which are not correct. There are some players who need time for a proper coaching. A coach should be patient enough to deal with the players.

  1. OPEN MINDED

The coach should be open-minded and should also consider the players’ perspective if they are good enough to apply for the team. The coach should also consider the ideas of the players. There is also a time when just due to ego a coach doesn’t listen to the players. They should treat all the players on the team equally.

  1. DISCIPLINED

If the coach is disciplined then only the players can follow the coach and be like him/her. All the sports and even in every field of life discipline is necessary for proper development and growth of the team. The coach is followed by the team members. Discipline has the strength to deal with every situation and can make the team successful in all aspects.

All the above criteria may or may not be found in any person in your surroundings. Don’t think this is a very disappointing matter. When you lose patience and start expecting too much from your surroundings you are too becoming like them. It is the very sensitive thing to be a leader or a coach, maybe your mates and close persons need your assistance.
